Practical Beekeeping for Beginners


The following is the tentative schedule for the 2017 Beginner’s Beekeeping Class. The class starts in mid February so it can be finished by late April when you should be installing your bees, weather permitting.


Nine Saturdays including a field day to the club hives.  Class meets February 25, 2017 through April 15, 2017 from 11:30AM — 2:00 pm.  This includes two club meetings, March 8 and April 12.  All meetings, except the Field Day, will be held at The Franklin Center, 50 Claiborne Ave., Rocky Mount, VA.

You will learn about:

  • The history of beekeeping
  • The Best ways to acquire bees
  • Life cycle of honeybees
  • Seasonal colony management
  • Equipment & supplies needed
  • Assembly of hive components
  • IPM techniques for managing pests and predators
  • Hands-on establishment of new colonies

$90.00 Tuition includes:

  • Classroom instruction
  • 3 textbooks
  • CD and Course notebook with lecture printouts & additional resources
  • 1 year’s membership in Moonshine Beekeepers Association
  • Field day for colony installation demo (exact date TBA)

Class size will be limited to 25 family units (spouse and/or children over 9 yrs)
